While it would be wonderful if everyone’s smile lasted a lifetime, the truth is that problems arise sometimes. For many reasons, individuals may end up missing teeth. Ask just about anyone who has received dentures or implants if they are happy, and they will tell you that it was one of the best decisions they ever made. Replacing missing teeth can give you back your ability to eat foods without embarrassment, speak clearly, and even make you look years younger. At The Denture & Implant Clinic in Surrey, we offer several different denture options to fit a wide range of needs and budgets.
We understand that choosing dentures is a major decision, which is why we have developed a menu of denture services. During your consultation, we can conduct a thorough examination and together we can come up with the solution that is best for you.
The Initial consultation
During this first visit, we will evaluate your oral health and perform a complete examination along with imaging. Patients who have problems with gum disease or severe decay may need to undergo treatment before evaluating options for tooth replacement. Depending on the number of teeth missing and your goals, we may recommend partial dentures, complete dentures, or implant-supported dentures.
Partial Dentures
Patients with just a few teeth missing may opt for partial dentures. Partial dentures can have either an acrylic or metal base and they require natural teeth to anchor the restoration in place. Clasps or other attachments keep the partial denture from moving around.
Complete Dentures
Complete dentures are used when patients are missing an entire arch of teeth. Conventional complete dentures are fabricated after the tissue has healed upon removal of existing teeth. This can take anywhere from four to six weeks. Immediate dentures are made before the teeth are extracted and can be placed immediately upon removal. Because gum tissue will shrink during healing, adjustments will have to be made after several weeks.
Implant-supported Dentures
Implant-supported dentures are the most permanent type of denture restoration. The implants are placed into the jawbone to replace the missing root and provide stability and support for the dentures, which will snap into place via an abutment. Implants also prevent bone loss. When a natural tooth is missing, the lack of stimulation from the root can cause the bone to deteriorate. Eventually, this can lead to further oral health problems including bone loss, gum tissue loss, and tooth loss. The implant acts as a replacement for the tooth root, stimulating to the jawbone and preserving its structure.
Whenever tooth loss occurs, it’s important to seek prompt treatment. Replacing missing teeth will not only give you back a beautiful smile, it will also improve your oral health and give you the confidence to eat and speak without worry.
