When it comes to missing teeth, you want to see a specialist. More than likely, you’ve heard horror stories about dentures and are nervous that they will be fake-looking or ill-fitting. At The Denture & Implant Clinic, we concentrate in offering our patients the highest level of restorative care to ensure that dentures enhance quality of life rather than take away from it.
Full and Partial Dentures
Dentures are removable replacement teeth that restore both aesthetics and functionality to the smile. There are two main types: full and partial.
- Full Dentures – Full dentures are used when all the natural teeth within an arch have either been lost or extracted. Conventional dentures are placed after several months, allowing the gum tissue adequate time for healing. Immediate dentures are placed right after the extractions.
- Partial Dentures – Partial dentures are used when only a few natural teeth are missing from an arch. They attach to remaining healthy teeth via a metal frame and hooks. Partial dentures are an alternative to fixed dental bridges.
Adjusting to dentures
Once you receive your full or partial dentures, there is an adjustment period. At first, simple tasks like speaking and eating can seem uncomfortable or awkward while the dentures form a comfortable fit. The good news is that the acclimation period doesn’t take a lot of time, and soon, you will be able to enjoy your new smile with ease.
Taking care of your dentures
With proper care, your dentures can last a long time. The biggest thing we tell patients is to be very gentle with them when cleaning because they can break. Before removing dentures, always set a towel down on the countertop in case they are accidently dropped. Keep them soaking overnight to prevent drying out. Make sure to verify whether your dentures require a special soaking solution or if they can soak in water. When cleaning your dentures, use a soft bristled toothbrush along with a special denture cleaner (toothpastes can be too harsh on your dentures) to brush them after use. Between brushings you should rinse the dentures off after a meal.
It’s important to keep your gum and tongue healthy by gently brushing them every morning and night as well.
