If you have several missing teeth and are looking for front tooth replacement options or ways to restore the function of missing back teeth, dental implants may be the right choice for you. At The Denture & Implant Clinic in Sutton, Surrey, Dr. Suril Amin and the team of dental professionals specialize in implants to replace missing teeth, as well as other tooth restoration options.

Linking implants together

Even if you have several missing teeth, you might not actually need a dental implant for every single missing tooth you have. They can often be linked together to save you time and money.

If you look at the image below, you will see that you can have one implant at the start of the missing tooth gap, another one at the end of the gap, and then join the teeth together. This means there’s a floating tooth in the middle; however, this option works very well.

What are the advantages of linking implants together?

Linking implants can help increase the lifespan of the implants, and it actually improves the biomechanics. This is particularly true if there is not enough bone to place big implants.

Another advantage is the reduced tooth replacement cost involved.

How many teeth can I add to two implants?

There is a limit to how many teeth you can add – you can’t just add eight teeth to two implants! The answer depends upon how big the implants are, where they are placed, how many other teeth you have in your mouth, and many other factors. A good rule of thumb is three teeth on two implants or five teeth on three implants.

Is it cheaper to get more done at once?

loving middle aged husband with wife outdoors looking forwardYes – generally, the more you have, the cheaper it is. This is because when we do surgery, the room needs to be properly sterilized and set up and then sterilized afterwards as well. It takes a good 40 minutes to set up and clean, and this often takes longer than actually placing the implants. For the surgeon to place an additional implant, it only takes him an extra 15 minutes.

In addition, we always place PRGF, which takes another 15 minutes to process, so all this times adds up.

Do I need to fill in ALL missing gaps with implants?

No – this will depend on your bite, the condition of your remaining teeth, and your finances. As a general rule of thumb, if you have 10 teeth at the top and 10 at the bottom, then you have a sufficient number of teeth to chew with. Anything more is a bonus; anything less and your teeth can deteriorate. An ideal number is 12 teeth at the top and 12 at the bottom.
