Dental Phobia & Nervous Patient Treatment

The Denture and Implant Clinic provide a service specially designed for patients who have a phobia of the dentist or are very nervous patients.

We provide special services including sedation and have a special machine called the Wand that enables the provision of completely pain free injections.

The Wand

The Wand is essentially a computer-controlled dental injection, whereby the flow rate of the local anaesthetic is controlled by a computer. This ensures the injection is provided slowly and steadily and therefore comfortably.

Many patients have a fear of injections or needles because they believe when the needle perforates the tissues it results in pain. However, this need not be the case.

More often than not injections are painful because the dentist is injecting the anaesthetic too quickly. Rapid injections can tear the tissue, which results in immediate pain followed by soreness. The Wand eliminates this possibility of human error.

Other Techniques

Other techniques used at our clinic include provision of a topical anaesthetic gel prior to any injection of local anaesthetic. This gel numbs the soft tissues so when the injection is administered, the needle cannot be felt.

Relaxation techniques and relaxing music to distract and block out the noises of the dental drill are also utilised to help relax patients.

Dr Justin Stewart's team is very caring and highly experienced in treating nervous and phobic patients, helping them to overcome their fear of the dentist. Even hypnotherapy can be provided. We are happy to spend as much time as is required with our patients to understand them and their fears.
