Consequence #3 of not seeing a hygienist

Following on from consequence #2, “Causes you Frustration”, in our series of 9 Consequences Of Not Seeing A Hygienist, here is #3:

Causes you Pain

A tooth rarely spontaneously starts to hurt, there are almost always early signs or symptoms that would have been picked up at a hygiene visit. Most teeth are lost due to gum disease and loss of the tooth is often painful either through an abscess around the tooth or as it loosens and moves in the gum.

9 Consequences Of Not Seeing A Hygienist

Gum disease afflicts some 80 to 90% of our adult population. The vast majority experience NO symptoms, and thus suffer the consequences of a silent insidious demise of not only their gums, but underlying bone, and often-times their overall systemic health.

The problem with gum disease is that it is a silent killer. It is often not visible and is often painless. The first sign of gum disease can be a loose tooth by which time it is too late, so the key to prevention is catching it in early stages and stopping it progressing.

As gum disease progresses there is irreversible jaw bone loss and because it is so hard for dentists to restore over reduced bone levels we really want to do all we can to stop this.

Finally, we have never seen gum disease heal itself. Gum disease progressively gets worse and like so many things the sooner you start working on stopping it, the better.

As you should be aware of the consequences of not seeing a hygienist, we have put together a warning list – here is no.1:

Costs Patients more money:

did you know the American dental system relies heavily on Dental Insurance and typically these insurers cover 100% of the fee for hygiene treatment? They only cover some of the cost for dental treatments like fillings and they only cover an even smaller amount of higher cost treatments like implants, crowns and root fillings. The reason they do this is because they know that seeing the hygienist regularly will save them money in the long-run. So if insurers know this, Patients need to know that in the long run they will save money by seeing a hygienist regularly.

Summary: 9 key Questions … You should ask the dentist before having Dental Implants!

Many patients have asked us to tell them what key questions they should be asking when choosing a dentist to place dental implants for them. We have devised probing questions that help the enquirer quickly find out if the implant provider is experienced and expert in this field:

How many implants do you place each year, and how many years have you been placing implants for?

Do you have a CT scanner on site?

Do you have a dental laboratory on site?

Will I meet the dental technician who is creating my new smile?

Do you guarantee the dental implants?

Do you take on difficult/impossible cases?

Are your prices value for money?

How do I clean my dental implants?

The above questions are really suggestions to stimulate a discussion between the dentist and patient. If the dentist is willing to spend time answering these questions and is knowledgeable about the answers it is more likely he will spend more time with you to ensure the best results. If you are in any doubt we offer a free consultation with no obligation, you are more than welcome to come along and get another opinion.

Q9: How do I clean my dental implants?

Following on from questions 8, “Are your prices value for money?“, in our series of 9 key questions you should ask the dentist making your implants, here is question 9:

How do I clean my dental implants?

To increase the longevity of the dental implants how they are cleaned is critical. A dentist taking pride in their work and, wanting their patient to get the most value from their dental implants, will emphasise the importance of cleaning around the dental implants and natural teeth. They may recommend for you to see a hygienist as a follow-up or book you in for a session with a dental nurse to go over dental implant hygiene with you. They may discuss the design of the crown and bridge work going on top of the dental implant to allow for access of a bottle brush to go around the implants when cleaning. In our clinic we include free hygiene visits as we want patients to experience the value of these maintenance visits.

Q8: Are your prices value for money?

Following on from questions 7, “Do you take on difficult/impossible cases?“, in our series of 9 key questions you should ask the dentist making your implants, here is question 8:

Are your prices value for money?

Naturally everyone wants value for money. For most people this means avoiding the cheapest on the market where quality may be compromised and also the most expensive. Larger dental implant providers tend to be below average in price but maintain a high quality as they can make use of volume to keep costs down.

Q7: Do you take on difficult/impossible cases?

Following on from questions 6, “Do you guarantee the dental implants?“, in our series of 9 key questions you should ask the dentist making your implants, here is question 7:

Do you take on difficult/impossible cases?

If the dental practice/implant centre take on difficult cases you are likely to be in very good hands for routine dental implant treatment. More complicated dental implant treatments include sinus lifts and ramus blade implants. Asking this question gives a good idea of the range of dental implant treatments provided.
